Same plumbing, different prize
The mistake is treating GEO as a separate discipline that replaces SEO. It isn't. An AI engine retrieves candidate pages the same way search does — indexation, title relevance, freshness — and then adds a step search never had: it picks which retrieved pages to quote in one answer.
So the plumbing overlaps almost entirely. What changes is the prize. On a search results page, being one of ten links still earns clicks. In an AI answer, being retrieved-but-not-quoted earns nothing.
Where they diverge, side by side
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Output | A ranked list of links | One synthesized answer |
| Winning position | Top of the results page | Quoted inside the answer |
| Consolation prize | Position #4 still gets clicks | Retrieved-but-not-quoted gets nothing |
| New lever | Backlinks, keywords | Extractable claims, first-party data, citations |
| Measurement | Rank tracking | Frozen multi-engine panel, sampled per engine |
The part that's genuinely new
Retrieval is old news dressed up: it's on-page SEO scored against AI-likely queries. The genuinely novel contribution of GEO is selection — will the model quote you once it has retrieved you?
Selection rewards things classic SEO never scored: a standalone-extractable passage, specific numbers a model can't invent, and cited statistics that lend borrowed credibility. That's why a below-threshold brand can win an AI answer even when it can't yet win the #1 organic link.
Retrieval overlap between engines is low — Google-grounded, Bing-grounded, and Perplexity's own index cite different sources — so GEO is measured across multiple engines, not one.
Common questions
If I do good SEO, do I automatically win GEO?+
Partly. Good SEO makes you retrievable, which is a prerequisite. But retrieval isn't selection — an AI can retrieve your page and still quote someone else's. The GEO-specific work is making your page the one it chooses to cite.
Is GEO going to replace SEO?+
No. GEO sits on top of SEO. You still need to be indexed and retrievable, which is SEO. GEO adds the selection layer. Anyone framing them as either/or misunderstands how retrieval-grounded AI answers are built.
What about AEO — is that different from GEO?+
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the same idea under a different label: optimizing to be the answer rather than a link. We use GEO throughout, but the mechanics — retrieval then selection — are identical.
