What a citation record actually captures
When an AI assistant answers, it doesn't invent from thin air — retrieval-grounded engines pull from real sources. Citation tracking logs those sources per query, per engine, per run.

Why it's the honest form of attribution
Without citation tracking, you're left guessing whether the blog post you shipped did anything. With it, you can point to the exact page an engine started quoting and the week it started — the difference between a story and a receipt.
It's also the fair way to read a flat week. If nothing you published got cited, the record shows that plainly instead of dressing it up. Outages and misses show as gaps, not guesses.
Citation tracking vs a raw visibility score
A visibility score answers 'how are we doing?' A citation record answers 'why, and because of which page?' You want both: the score to see the trend, the citations to attribute it. A score with no citation record behind it can't tell you what to do next.
Engines cite different sources — Google-grounded and Bing-grounded answers overlap surprisingly little — so citations are tracked across every engine on the panel, not one.

A page can have few backlinks and still be cited by an AI if it's the most extractable answer — which is exactly why the two are worth tracking separately.
Can I see which of my pages earned a citation?+
Yes — that's the point. By capturing cited URLs run over run, you can tie a new citation to the specific page that earned it, and measure the lag from when you published it to when the engine first quoted it.
Do all AI engines expose their citations?+
To varying degrees. Some surface explicit source links; for others you infer citation from the domains and claims in the answer text. A good tracker captures both the explicit citations and the domains named in the answer.
